Trapping in Reality

On the top of the image is a Chinese woman wearing her shoes in size 10 cm. On the bottom is me wearing a children’s shoe in size 11-12 cm.

This project is to show the relationship between the photographer and Ancient Chinese Women Culture. Having two different identities, Canadian and Chinese in one body is confusing and this project is a way of finding myself back by researching and trying my best to experience and understand the things they experienced before as Ancient Chinese women. See and feel through recreating and re-experience the rules they set for Ancient Chinese women. Seeing myself compared with the women beside me, so alike but at the same time, thousands of years apart from each other. It is sad to think, just because of the time difference made so many differences that I got the chance to see the world, and they had been locked up in that world with nowhere to escape.

On the left side of the image are my feet on a box with a cup to compare my feet' size. On the right side is the example of footbinding on a box with a cup aside.
On the left side of the image, there is a 3 kg can of tea on my head, facing back. On the right side is a woman with the ancient Chinese women’s traditional hairstyle.
